Hacking

and the
Future of Humanity

In this book the author describes the current biological technological potential. It touches themes from the evolution of sexual reproduction, to global politics and philosophical dilemmas. It gives a deep and interesting overview of this industry and its challenges.

  • We need to come to a global regulatory agreement to limit the use of modern biological technologies. Even if it looks futuristic or distant, the reality is we have the power to radically affect our genetic pool.

  • Many technological advances started out of necessity, and now they are a aesthetical practice such as plastic surgery. There's a big risk of this happening with gene alteration. To what extent should we allow it?

  • If we are looking for the healthiest way of life for humans, why should we not use the capability to modify genes for improvement. And to what extent is it inmoral not to use this technology?

  • Why is God not playing God? and to what extent do we have the right to modify human life, even if to improve it?

In general I would definitely recommend this book. It doesn't go into detail on the underlying science (it is more of a conceptual book), but it does give a broad idea of the possibilities we have today. Definitely eye opening and very interesting.
