La Teoría de los Sentimientos Morales

Adam Smith

18 mar 2023

In this book the author explores the limits of self interest, virtues and his view on ethics. It is interesting to see how his vision on morality gets lost with a distortion of his ideas of wealth and economics.

  • Sympathy is and expression of self love, we project in others. It is not an act of egocentrism.

  • Prudence is the highest form of virtue.

  • There's a social approval to morality. Specifically we approve & admire self control.

  • He makes an invitation for self sacrifice to achieve the greater good.

  • There's an admiration to the postponement of current pleasure, for the attainment of a future one.

  • Even the vilest person cares (has interest) about someone else's luck.

It definitely gives a different perspective on the typical interpretation of Smith. It is interesting to see he was one of the first defenders of conscious consumption, and the impact we have as consumers.
