In this book the author talks about art, it's use and the profound contradiction between literary currents. She is a great author, a great thinker. This book gives and inside in the thought process of her writing.
An important underlying conflict between naturalists and romantics is determinism versus freedom.
Romanticism is a value oriented, morality centered, movement. It's material is not journalistic, but the abstract, the essential.
The purpose of literature should be to portrait who we ought to be, not who we are.
Art is a Selected recreation of reality. An artist does not fake reality, it stylizes it.
Art is the translation of the metaphysical understanding of the artist to the public. Of it's sense of life.
We seek a confirmation of our view of a concrete reality through art. Creating moments of metaphysical joy.
In general I would definitely recommend this book, and particularly this author. It gives a structured and deep understanding on art as a philosophical system. Would also recommend her novels.
